Happening

Happening is an artistic movement that appeared in the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It combined visual art, performance, theater, music, and everyday actions. A Happening was usually a live event. Unlike traditional art, a Happening did not focus on creating a permanent object. The experience and participation were more important than the final result.

The artist most closely connected with Happening is Allan Kaprow, who is often regarded as the creator of the movement. He believed that art should become a part of everyday life. One of his most famous works is 18 Happenings in 6 Parts (1959), which is considered the first Happening. Another important work is Household (1964), where participants took part in a series of unusual actions. Claes Oldenburg was another key figure of the movement. His project The Store (1961) combined sculpture, performance, and everyday commercial life, that showed how art could exist outside traditional galleries.

Several artists helped to develop Happening. Allan Kaprow focused on audience participation and the idea that art could be created through actions. Claes Oldenburg explored ordinary objects and daily experiences. Jim Dine used personal objects and performances in his works, while Robert Whitman created events that combined movement, sound, and visual effects.

Happening was supported by important theoretical ideas. Allan Kaprow wrote many texts explaining the movement. In his essay The Legacy of Jackson Pollock, he argued that art should move beyond painting and become a real-life experience. Claes Oldenburg expressed similar ideas in his text I Am for an Art (1961). He wrote that art should be connected with everyday life rather than separated from it. Another important theorist was Michael Kirby, who studied Happening and performance as new artistic forms.

Other movements were really influencial to Happenings. Dada was exploring experimentation and it also was against traditional art ideas. Abstract expressionism works of Jackson Pollock also inspired artists to focus on the action and process of art instead of finished products. Experimental theater and music also played an important role in the development of Happenings.

The influence of Happening can be seen to this day. It helped make performance art, installation art, conceptual art, and interactive art what they are today. Many contemporary artists still use participation and everyday actions in their works. That makes Happening a very important chapter in the history of modern and contemporary art.
